Regular Dad

The life and thoughts of a pretty normal middle-aged, middle-class, suburban dad. Also doubling as a mental health exercise to maintain what little shreds of sanity I have left. I’ll cover home life with 2 kids and a bread-winner wife, sports, news, rants, raves, and of course whiskey and craft beer. And naturally whatever else is going on in my life that week.

Thursday Jul 11, 2024

We had a very successful 4th of July.  Many meats were cooked, including that full packer brisket, and everything was delicious.  And no one was injured in any fireworks related incident!!
Then I discuss my thoughts on why we need to get back to a culture where it's acceptable to tease and be teased.  In comedies and in life.  It's a learned skill that we're 'safe spacing' out of society.
Review of yet another barrel proof offering out of Heaven Hill, this one a wheat whiskey under the Bernheim brand.
Then some sports talk.  Yeah! Guy stuff!  First, how do you define what is and isn't a sport?  Then, let's take a step back and review the current QB salary market.  Does it still seem reasonable?  Does it?
Enjoy!

The a/c is officially working like normal again!  Oh happy day.  And as of now it was free, since I haven't received an invoice for the job yet.
And I don't know why it never clicked before, but I've been mistaking some of my MIL's behaviors as a symptom and not a cause.  And it really does filter out into a great many things.  I really making progress here.
More psychology on me, especially as it pertains to gatherings that may or may not get a bit rowdy.  Spoiler alert, I sometimes struggle with these.
New Riff's Blue Clarage is up, and with that fun wrinkle that I teased before.  I think it's awesome.
Enjoy!

Lots of little topics this week.  But we start with animatronic Alanis Morriset.  That's...about...as...nicely as I can put it.  And game 7 of the Stanley Cup featuring McJesus.
And surprise surprise there were some misfortunes!  Who could have guessed?!  But we perservere.  Fight the good fight.  Solder on.
A shorter than normal whiskey review of 1792 Full Proof.  I guess I just prattled less than normal.
And then the normal rambling wrap-up with random thoughts.
Enjoy!

Happy (belated) Father's Day to all the dads out there!  Over here, I had to shift it to consume part of Saturday, because Sunday afternoon/evening was taken up by something else.  But many meats were cooked, drinks were drunk, merriment was merried.
Not only do I review Penelope Architect (build 9), but I came up with a great idea that I need to get Skup to execute for me.  Obviously 'great' will be subjective.
And yes, Facebook keeps making me regret ever making a comment on that dude's Harrison Butker post.  Sometimes the algorithm helps you out, sometimes it likes to kick you in the nuts.  Repeatedly.
But I'm in a better mood (as of recording, spoiler alert) and like the direction things are going.  As of recording.  Not saying anything has changed since then.  But also not not saying.
Enjoy!

I've done it!  I got a real person to come on for an interview.  And not just a family member, or friend, or someone that owed me a favor.  I legit podcaster with a life of his own took time out of his weekend to have a zoom call with me.
This is definitely not the smoothest interview podcast you'll ever hear, but no one's first time was their best time.  You just gotta get that cherry popped...
I get in a quick whiskey review and pretty much Irish goodbye this thing.  You'll see.
Enjoy!

Thursday Jun 06, 2024

I had a rejuvenating weekend of getting chores done, firepit time, grilling meats, and learned a little more about the awful machinery that makes this thing tick.  Turns out I'm a contradicting, somehow complicated mess.  And I need to dabble in 1,059 mini hobbies to be content.
The review is what I believe is the final bottle from that soccer trip to Total Wine.  But don't quote me on that; I don't keep great notes still.
Embarrasing story?  I've got one, that really should have ended with me kidnapped and buried in my neighbor's basement.  But besides my best efforts it obviously didn't.
Enjoy!

Saturday Jun 01, 2024

We survived our holiday weekend on Long Island.  But unfortunately it was (ironically) too easy.  We absolutely should have been put to work.
The wedding was great and had a memory I won't soon forget.  And just when I thought we were too old for these first-time weddings with bridesmaids and groomsmen and the whole shabang.
And of course, things at the mother-in-law's didn't go the way we hoped.  And I really do wish I was allowed to do more.  But hey, not my circus not my monkey.
I review a craft whiskey from Long Island; super appropriate.
Then actually talk about mental health stuff.  Weird, right?!
Enjoy!

Saturday May 25, 2024

My (Hayley proclaimed) mini-me has turned 8.  And he managed to turn it into essentially 3 days of birthday fun.  But hey, that's the point of being a kid, right?!  Make every birthday as jam-packed as possible.
I finally had that moment where it really hit me how entitled this younger generation is and it was a facebook bourbon group that did it.  Even better, I made the mistake of almost getting into a facebook comment arguement with an ultra-right-winger over Harrison Butker's speech.  Why?  Cause I'm stupid.
I review the latest release from Pursuit United, which I can finally get near me, then out myself on how I'm a touch selfish with random food items.  Maybe I'm not actually perfect after all.
Enjoy!

Happy Mother's Day!  And no, I'm not talking to the women who own dogs.  Or cats.  Or really any other animal.  I recap our mother's day adventures and then drop into a whole discussion on women seemingly being more vocal on their health care rights.  Or maybe it's just an algorithm.  Either way I like what I see.
Then a not quick review of a Rebel private barrel, some unnecessary decoder infomration, and a comparison to a newer barrel.
Then we wrap it up with my midyear review thoughts.  Spoiler alert, I can do better.
Enjoy!

Thursday May 09, 2024

Busy weekend here.  Far away soccer games, 2nd grade baseball, then I flipped a switch and went crazy with preparing and cooking meats outside.  Why?  Probably just because I could.  What more excuse do I need to play with a meat grinder?!
And of course a 'quick' conversation about some yet another interpersonal communication lesson.  With a simply beautiful analogy that I clearly don't do justice.
Review of a brand new bottle and we're out.
Enjoy!
