Regular Dad

The life and thoughts of a pretty normal middle-aged, middle-class, suburban dad. Also doubling as a mental health exercise to maintain what little shreds of sanity I have left. I’ll cover home life with 2 kids and a bread-winner wife, sports, news, rants, raves, and of course whiskey and craft beer. And naturally whatever else is going on in my life that week.

I did it.  I successfully organized a 3-generation trip to the BWCA wilderness.  Entry permit, kids packed correctly, outfitter arranged for the bits we didn't have, lodging for the in and out days, etc.  Even had a rough plan for what we'd do for our 5-days / 4-nights.
And then, just like the Wilderness loves to do, things went sideways.  Nothing major from an execution stand-point, but we didn't start on the lake I intended.  And only 3 of the 4 of us seems to actually enjoy this level of camping.
Warning, this episode is WAY too much of a downer.  I guess I just needed to get out the bad emotions to cleanse things.  I'll do a happier recap next week with the really cool stuff we did and saw and experienced.  Cause there was a lot of journal-worthy events.
Enjoy (I guess)!!

Well, if everything is planned right and going well, this will drop in the middle of what will be remembered as the first awesome canoe camping trip with my boys.  And no, I don't have any anxiety at all.  None.  Totally didn't wake up at 4am today letting bad thoughts creep in to my consciousness.
But in nothing but happy news, our marriage has survived yet another calendar year.  I know, we keep beating the odds-makers.  And we almost dind't do anything for it.  Luckily Hayley made a dinner reservation last minute so we weren't completely lame.

The kids are back home again, and visiting "day" has been completed.  If you're only allowed on-site for like 4 hours, can it really be considered a day?  And is it worth 5 hours of driving each way?
Is AI coming for the movie industry?  As in, when we look out 10, 20, 30 years, will AI generated movies be the norm and human-acted movies be pushed to the new indie films?  When you look at the trends of modern human history, add in the rapid scaling up of AI capabilities, I don't see anything really preventing it.  Maybe I'm wrong on this, but just look at how many other facets of our lives we've happily gone human-free.

The reno is finally nearing a close.  It's all down to the fit and finish stuff, which somehow takes the longest.  I knew it, but it's still a pain.
The Home Run Derby actually had some excitement this year.  And a couple guys that were hitting tanks straight outta the 90s.  But the game itself is still not giving.  Tough when so many stars are either not there or playing very little.  But we have a fix for that...
And I'm hearing grumblings of a potential strike.  Owners want a salary cap, over-paid players don't.  Any stoppage would obviously be devistating to baseball's popularity, moreso than any other time.  But fear not, I also have the perfect modified salary cap system to fix everything.

This episode is like 90% soccer.  Mostly to vent out my frustrations at what happened to the USMNT on Monday.  So much hype, so much promise, so much potential.  And then they went out there and looked like every hot mess that came before.
Did anyone else wonder about our stated best finish of 3rd place in the 1930 world cup?  Like, how is it possible we finished 3rd, but then never won an elimination game until 2002?  Time for school.
And yeah, another 4th of July party, another gambling disagreement with the same dude.

Yup, I'm back to dealing with the generator.  Again.  But this time from a place of acceptance.  I know it's my fault and it's time to undo my wrongs.
I haven't gone on any religious rants in a bit.  So let's get to it.  All sparked by our really good tile guys.  So I had to bottle most of this up to stay in their good graces.
We finished the final season of Euphoria.  Don't worry, I do a pretty admirable job of not giving away any spoilers.

Do I really have to finally admit that I'm over the hill?  Have I truly left my peak behind me instead of pretending I can still make a new peak?  Or am I just having a bad week and this is how it's manifesting?
The kids are officially at sleep-away camp.  And sweet jebus it couldn't have come soon enough.  It was only like 1.5 weeks of post-school and it was rough.  Now comes almost 4 weeks of peace.

The baseball seems to never end.  But at least this time I wasn't sitting in a hot-ass field all greased up with sunscreen watching the kids lose for 6 hours.  Oh wait...
And yay, summer camp has started.  And the other wants to do tennis clinics.  It's okay, I don't mind getting up every 90-120 minutes to drive kids around.  It's not like I'm trying to work and maintain my sanity or anything.
Oh boy did I miss a major issue with the new bedroom/closet/bathroom reno.  And it's far too late to do literally anything about it.  So enjoy these episodes while you can, cause my days may be numbered...

Well I'm once again broken by a week.  Nothing tragic, it just walked me right down little by little.
We had hours and hours and hours of baseball.  All victories, but it's still A LOT of hours at various fields.
We had a middle school graduation.  On a Tuesday morning.  Followed by a nice lunch.  And then an on-line barrel pick from Copper & Cask
Then more baseball, a friggin HOUR FROM HOME, followed by going straight to hockey and taking a slapshot to the bottom of my thigh where there's virtually no padding.
So yeah, this episode isn't my most energetic, focused, coherent ones.  But not everything is a line-drive to the gap.  Sometimes it's a HBP to your elbow.

Well, this has been a week of multiple screw up.  I somehow recorded this and then just never editted and published it.  I kinda see how that happened given how the week went, but it's weird that it never crossed my mind.
And yeah, if you were confused about a couple things last episode, here is the background that you were missing.
But we take a walk down memory lane for a bit, and then discuss some of the early renovation issues, and a bit more about Myles's struggles with his impending break-up.
Enjoy!
